Blue is a mighty color. Our world always looks blue from outer space, no matter what the weather's like down here. We are all drenched in blue. Our language reflects that. Insights hit us 'out of the blue'. Freedom comes from zooming 'into the blue'. Receiving a 'bolt from the blue' can change our lives. Gaze into the sky and the blue seems limitless and luminous. Today, thinking expansively and generously – as wide as the horizon – isn't just optional but essential. Only big, blue thinking can bring about a better future on this big, blue world. And we need that because we don't have a spare one.
BIG BLUE THINKING?
My name is Lindsey Dawson.
I contend we are in the midst
of beginning to 'think blue' - realizing our blue planet is an increasingly crowded home upon which we must accept our shared history and destiny if humans are to have a future here at all.
The ways in which we divide ourselves are all ideas we have created – the borders between countries, the differences between races and religions, the ownership of resources.
While science has roared ahead, our own behaviour (and that of nation states) is often little better than that of toddlers in pre-school as we yell at each other, "It's mine!" "No, it's mine!"
We've known we are all in this together ever since the first photos of Earth from space arrived in the late 1960s.(Thanks, NASA, for all those beautiful images.)
But our mindsets have hardly changed at all.
It will take soaring imagination, huge intent, brave action and generous attitudes to create a better 'world' than the one we live upon now.
We can all start in our own lives by enlarging our narrow perspectives, seeing the big picture and being willing to jump into a wider life.
Come with me, into the blue...
WHO AM I? The author of nine books, including three novels and three self-help titles and a book on surviving the rollercoaster ride of middle age. A former editor who created three top newsstand magazines – including the ever-popular Next – I also hosted Let’s Talk, a weekly show about books, ideas and events for Face TV. The latest book is not about blue but two other colours, scarlet and magenta.
They symbolise the two people who are star-crossed lovers in my historical novel Scarlet and Magenta, available on Kindle.
I love talking to audiences about being alert to messages from the blue – those 'bolts from the blue' that urge people to look up, fuel up and confidently push off to new frontiers in their work and personal lives. Check out the video for a brief idea of content that can be adapted to a range of wants and needs.
